【Feature Exhibition 2】Mass Gathering of "Mr.Daruma" Jul. 21, 2020 (Tue) ~ Sep. 13, 2020 (Sun)

Don’t call me “Kowakawa”(Scary but Cute)!

Daruma (bodhidharma) was an Indian Buddhist monk in the 6th century who brought Zen Buddhist teachings to China. Chinese Zen Buddhism, which was founded by Daruma, was later introduced to Japan. Temples of Japan’s Zen Buddhism sects such as the Rinzai and Soutou Sects deified and enshrined the Daruma figure as their founder. After the Edo period, the image of Daruma was introduced in the design of the auspicious self-righting doll called “Koboshi” and several other children’s toys and games. In time, the image of Daruma became widely accepted by ordinary people all around Japan.

The image of Daruma had been predominantly instilled in our everyday life and culture not only because he was a great man who spread the valuable teachings of the Buddha, but also because his facial features were unique and impactful. His anecdotes also tell us that he was an extraordinary person indeed. For example, he infuriated the Chinese Emperor by conversing with him in a blunt manner and, in another story, he lost both his arms and legs for sitting in meditation while facing the wall for 9 long years.

As a matter of fact, his portrait was depicted as a very strict bearded old man with eyes wide open. However when you look closer, his facial expression appears to be somehow humorous and adorable. That is why he is often addressed as “Daruma san” in the friendliest manner. Scary, but cute!
This exhibition focuses on the uniqueness of Daruma, who is often described as “kowa-kawa" (scary but cute!), and to find out why people are attracted to him.
