Fukuoka City was born one hundred thirty (130) years ago on April 1st, 1889. This was also the day when thirty (30) other cities of Japan including Nagasaki, Kurume, Kumamoto, Kagoshima and Saga cities of Kyushu area, started their municipal organization.
At
that time, Fukuoka city was only 5.08 square kilometers in size. It was merely
1.5 percent of the size of present day Fukuoka City and the same size of the
Fukuoka Castle town in the Edo Period.
Number of population was fifty thousand eight
hundred forty seven (50,847), which is only 3.3 percent of the present Fukuoka
City’s population. Now, Fukuoka city’s population is more than one million five
hundred eighty thousand (1,580,000). It is the 6th biggest number after Tokyo,
Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya and Sapporo city.
One
hundred thirty years (130) years ago, at the time when the city was
established, Fukuoka city was the 15th biggest in population. In the Kyushu
area, Fukuoka was a 3rd biggest city after Kagoshima and Nagasaki.
How
Fukuoka city evolved to become a city, which boasts the largest population in
Kyushu area? This exhibition describes the transition of the city by
introducing the city’s goal in each period and memorable words.
