Tachi, Long Sword “Nikkou Ichimonji” (National Treasure) is now on display!

Our national treasure, a sword named Nikko Ichimonji, is currently being exhibited in our feature exhibition until March 4th. 

The sword is the masterpiece of the Bizen Fukuoka Ichimonji School and was crafted in the 13th century. It boasts of a beautiful blade pattern called the Joka choji (multilayered clove shapes) which was considered the signature style of the swords of the Ichimonji School. The pattern is often said to have a certain resemblance to cherry blossoms in full bloom. Take a closer look and see for yourself.

The sword is not only beautiful but also historically significant. It bore witness to some important historical events of Japan. Experience this sword’s colorful past by scrutinizing its shiny blade.
