【Feature Exhibition 4】Excavated Traces of War Wed.12th August, 2020 – Sun. 13th September, 2020

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Artifacts and relics of war from the Meiji period or later were found in research excavations conducted in more than 2500 sites in Fukuoka City.

In 1886, the 24th infantry regiment was positioned in the Fukuoka castle ruins. Numerous other military facilities were also placed there in successive periods.  Numerous military-related items were excavated from the ruins of Fukuoka Castle and the Korokan guesthouse. They include the remains of infantry facilities, building tools and materials, dog tags, and armaments like swords, guns, and bullets.

The remains of the bomb-proof shelters were found at archaeological sites in urbanized areas like Hakata. From such shelters, some relics which show the impact of the Fukuoka air raids were found. Some items made of glass or porcelain used as substitute for metals that were missing at the end of World War 2 were found.

We sincerely hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for you to think about war and peace while viewing these relics and articles of war.
