On June 19, 1945, a B-29 heavy bomber plane of
the United States conducted an air raid on Fukuoka starting from midnight to
the early morning of the next day. It resulted in the destruction of central
Fukuoka at the time. The Hakata area was severely damaged by the attack. This
was known as the “Fukuoka Air Raid”.
This series of exhibits is being held annually
to commemorate “The
Day of The Great Fukuoka Air Raid” of June 19, 1945. The 28th edition will be introducing how women
lived during World WarⅡ.
Japan was advocating for an all-out war and
had been encouraging all citizens to take part in it. Even women, who were
exempted from military duties, must take part in helping soldiers in various
ways. Their duties included: visiting the barracks, procuring commodities for
soldiers, the production of arms and food, and so on.
We sincerely hope that this exhibition, which
introduces women’s way of living in the war period, will provide a good
opportunity for you to think about the ravages of war and the search for peace.
