【Feature Exhibition 3】Compilation of Fukuoka’s Excavation Research #10 Oct. 29. 2019 Tue – Jan. 19. Sun

Archaeological study of microscopic world

In Fukuoka city, scores of excavation research projects are conducted annually, and the total number of the projects held in Fukuoka was building up to be a thousand cases or more.

In excavation projects, researchers find artifacts such as an earthenware, stone tools, bronze ware and wooden items. Along with those findings, they have even found something that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Researchers only realized the significance of their discovery after bringing back the excavated items to the lab to be observed under the microscope. What they discover varies from pollen, parasite eggs, bugs, and even traces of plants that were accidentally included in the clay during the process of making earthenware. None of these miniature objects can be found without the help of a microscope. By using microscopes, researchers can even identify the material of the clothes which adhered to bronze ware or iron ware.

This exhibition invites you to the microscopic world revealed through numerous excavation research projects in Fukuoka.
