This is the exhibition that is held annually at the beginning of the year, to introduce newly acquired objects of the museum. Although the title says “new”, the objects on display were acquired three years ago. It might make you wonder, “Then, what is “new” about?” The Fukuoka city museum receives tens of thousands of articles annually. It takes one year to investigate, repair, fumigate, register and finally store these articles. It takes another one year to gather information and put the objects in order by taking photos and imputing data in the museum’s database.
To hold an exhibition inaugurating these articles, curators need to select objects to exhibit and prepare explanatory notes for each of these chosen items. For this reason, a total of three years is necessary to open the “Exhibition of New Acquisitions”.
This year, the exhibition introduces 200 well-selected items out of 15,864 articles accepted in 2016. The first chapter of this exhibition introduces historical documents and art pieces from the medieval to early modern period. The second chapter covers objects from the early modern period to the modern period. The third chapter displays articles that explain people’s lives from the ancient to the modern period. The fourth chapter exceptionally introduces the collections of private citizens that were assembled throughout their lives.
Each chapter contains historically significant articles of Fukuoka city. The 1st to the 3rd chapters display exhibits that were once a family treasure inherited and kept throughout the periods. The fourth chapter introduces articles gathered by individuals, in accordance with the person’s preference and belief. Keeping and collecting - both human activities are the basis of a museum’s activity.
We sincerely hope that this exhibition, which introduces a variety of artifacts, will be an opportunity for visitors to experience Fukuoka’s rich history and culture. We’d like to extend our sincerest gratitude to those who cooperated in the production of this exhibition.
