【Feature Exhibition 4】War and Our Way of Living 29 Jun. 16, 2020 (Tue) ~ Aug. 10. 2020(Mon)

Seventy-five years have passed since the end of the Pacific war in 1945. On June 19th of the
same year, large formations of B‐29 long-range bomber planes of the United States
conducted an air raid on Fukuoka starting from midnight to the early morning of the next
day. It resulted in the destruction of central Fukuoka, especially Hakata, Tenjin, and the Ohori
park area. This was known as the “Fukuoka Air Raid”.

This series of exhibits is being held annually to commemorate “The Day of The Great
Fukuoka Air Raid” of June 19, 1945. The 29th edition will exhibit clothing, daily necessities, and money during the war period.

When the Sino‐Japanese war broke out in July of 1937, the demand for weapons increased
and Japan‘s economic condition improved immensely. As the war prolonged, society started
to suffer from scarcity affecting the workforce and supplies. As a result, the prices of
commodities were raised. To prevent the price‐hike, the government decided to limit the
maximum price for each commodity. They even introduced a ration system so that people
can have their equal share of daily necessities.

Citizens who lived in this period procured daily necessities that were not distributed by the
government through recycling their belongings or purchasing them from the black market.
We sincerely hope that this exhibition will give you a great opportunity to think about the
impact of war and peace.
