With the support of many people, Fukuoka City Museum has been gathering our collection starting from 1983, the year when the Fukuoka City Museum Preparation Office was established. The number of collections now rose to more than 170,000 cases. This exhibition showcases some selected items, including national treasures and important cultural assets, from our museum collection.

To commemorate the Fukuoka City Museum’s 30th anniversary year, we are planning to hold a special exhibition named “Great Exhibition of Fukuoka Castle”, to explain everything about Fukuoka castle and the castle town, which were the basis of the present-day Fukuoka.

However, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, we have decided to hold the exhibition “Treasures of Fukuoka –Castle, town and its people -” that showcases selected treasures out of our 170,000 items, instead. In this way, we could hold the exhibition without lending items from other facilities. What’s more, we could still achieve our purpose to introduce the origin of Fukuoka City through the showing of the museum’s collection gathered throughout the years, thanks to citizen’s contributions.

This exhibition’s main feature is the treasures of Kuroda Family, the dominating family of the Fukuoka Clan. We will also display our national treasure swords “Heshikiri Hasebe” and “Nikko-Ichimonji”, which are usually displayed separately from January to February of every year. In this exhibition, you can see them both and they will remain on display for a longer time than usual.

The exhibition also introduces techniques and industries that were nurtured in Fukuoka City’s long history, and some cultures originated in Fukuoka through the display of our museum items. We sincerely hope that this exhibit will be a good opportunity for visitors to view the treasures of Fukuoka from different perspectives.
