Artworks Loved by the Ladies of the Fukuoka Clan

-The history of family treasure viewed from ladies perspective-
This exhibition is the fourth edition of series exhibition entitled; “The Fukuoka City Museum meets The Fukuoka Art Museum: Treasures of Kuroda Family Series”

This exhibition features works of art used by ladies of the Kuroda Family from the Fukuoka Clan.


Most of the items used by lords of Fukuoka Clan, especially Yoshitaka and Nagamasa, the founder and the first lord of the Fukuoka clan respectively, were mentioned in Juhouki, a treasure list of the family. These items on the list were recognized as family treasures and have been valued and passed over from generation to generation.
However, what kind of items ladies of the family were using is unclear. In this exhibition, we will explain how these items used by ladies of Kuroda, acquired by the family by showing items considered to be used by ladies together with some family record.


The most notable artifact in the exhibition is a folded screen owned by Shinkuin or Rokuko, a wife of Tsunamasa the fourth lord.


 Shinkuin was from Tachibana family in Yanagawa, Fukuoka. Interestingly, the image on the folded screen doesn’t depict Yanagawa, her hometown, but the different location. It depicts scenery of Matsushima bay in Sendai, which is one of Japan's three most scenic views.
Considering the fact that Shinkuin’s mother was from Date family of the Sendai clan, the folded screen might have gifted to Shinkuin from her mother as a legacy.
It looks like the folded screen has a lot of heartwarming stories behind it, don’t you think?

学芸課長のつぶやき2「担当者の孤独な闘い」

今回は、展覧会前年度(平成28年度)の話。

いきなりですが、全国に博物館は何館あるでしょう?

ちょっと古い統計ですが、平成23年度で5747館(文部科学省調べ)。
このうち都道府県や政令市の審査を受けた「登録博物館」(当館もこれ)が913館。
福岡市博物館が開館した平成2年が、全体で2973館(登録博物館562館)ですので、この4半世紀でほぼ倍増しているのです。

博物館で特別展を行う場合、他館から作品・資料を借用しますが、博物館が増えているということは、作品・資料を借りるのも大変で、特に国宝や重要文化財となると、1年以上前から交渉しなくてはなりません!

そこで、平成28年度は、借用したい資料の調査や借用の交渉が重要な仕事となります。
もちろん、直接お会いして借用交渉を行うのが原則ですが、このご時世、出張旅費は多くはありません。
そこで、電話で相手の館の感触をうかがいながら、効率よく出張するための日程を決めて、いざ出陣!

にこにこ顔で帰館したときは、借用内諾(^_^)  
無言で帰ってくると、残念(T_T)
でも落ち込む暇もなく、次の借用交渉へ。

一方、どこの市町村でも夏が終わる頃から来年度の予算編成作業が始まります。
鴻臚館展でも展覧会開催のための29年度予算の作成を行いますが、これがまた厄介。
入場者数を何人と見込むのか。それによって大きく収入=支出が変わってきます。

当然、赤字は出せません!
しかし、できるだけ良い雰囲気の会場を作るとなると会場造作の費用がかかります。
展覧会には図録がつきものだし、関連するイベントや講演会にかかる費用も必要です
過去の展覧会等を参考に、財政も何度も予算書と企画書を作り変えて、ようやくできあがると、もう世間は木枯らしが吹いている・・・

展覧会タイトルは「よみがえる!鴻臚館~行き交う人々と唐物~(ん?今と少し違う)、会期は平成299月7日(木)~平成291022日(日)と仮決定。

年度末が近付くと、いよいよ展覧会の本格準備が開始。
借用の内諾を得たリストを整理し、展覧会の構成を固め、関連イベントの企画を詰めて、展覧会のための実行委員会を開催です。
展覧会タイトルも「よみがえれ!鴻臚館-行き交う人々と唐物-」(やっと決まった!)と最終決定。
借用先のリスト。今回は約500点以上の資料が展示されます!


ここまで2年間、担当者一人で孤独な戦いを続けてきましたが、29年度は、博物館一丸となった戦いが繰り広げられます。それはまた次回に。

Ancient Sweets Making Workshop


In this event, you’ll learn some interesting facts about the sweets of the ancient period. For example, did you know that in the Heian period, fruits were considered as sweets and there was a fried pastry shop in Kyoto? After learning all those mentioned, let’s make sweets by using ancient recipe! Of course, you’ll get to taste it at the end of the session!

Date: Monday October 9th
There are two sessions on the 9th. Each session has 15 seats available. Pre-order is required.
 ①10:00am to noon ②2:00pm to 4:00pm
 Place: Fukuoka City Museum 2nd floor “multipurpose room”

  • This event is not age-restricted, but elementary school kids or younger should be accompanied by an adult.
  • In case of too many applications, we will draw slots for place allocation.

How to apply
You can apply by postcard, fax, phone or e-mail. Write your name, age, address and phone number and number of participants (maximum of 2 persons) . The whole session will be conducted in Japanese. If you need language help, please write your native language and level of English Comprehension on the application form. Sign language interpreter is also available upon request.
The application, in any form, must be received at the museum on or before September 15th 2017.

Scent of the Tale of Genji –scent bag making experience-

The Heian period is the period when incense, which had been used in rituals or as deodorant, started to be enjoyed in the everyday life of aristocrats.

重要文化財 源氏物語絵色紙帖(絵合)京都国立博物館
In the tale of Genji, a classic work of Japanese literature, the scent description of the scene is effectively used to highlight the background of the main characters, personality and intelligence.

The description of the scent from each scene can give readers a better understanding of the mood of the scenes. In this event, we’ll provide you with a good opportunity to try out the scent of the ancient period. Reviving the scent by using traditional recipe, we will enable you to get a glimpse of the world of “The Tale of Genji.”

Date: Sunday September 24th
There are two sessions on the 24th. Each session has 15 seats available. Pre-order is required.

Feature Exhibition: Nighttime and items

-Half of our life is night-



Have you ever walked in the complete darkness, where you can’t see anything? When you do so, you’ll feel like your body will be dissolved into the darkness. It’ll give you a huge sense of anxiety.


 About 1000 years ago, Seisho Nagon, a Japanese writer, wrote in her book, “Makurano soushi(The Pillow Book)” as follows, “In Summer, night time is the best, especially when the moon is bright. Even in the complete darkness, you’ll see many fire flies floating around here and there. It is also nice to see one or two of them flying about, releasing faint lights. If it rains, it’s good too.” Her appreciation of the moonlight or lights released from fire flies shows us the importance of the light at night.



Development of lights enabled us to use our night time more effectively. We needed light when we do an all-nighter. Ten years after the electric light began to be sold to the public, our average sleeping hours was said to have shortened by 2 hours. Introduction of electric lights changed our way of spending nights.
This exhibition depicts the way of spending nighttime from past to present by showing some items used at night.

Feature exhibition: Marriage and Kuroda Family

-Gorgeous Wedding Ceremonies of Daimyo Feudal Lords and Behind the Scene-



When we think of the wedding ceremony of a daimyo feudal lord, we imagine something gorgeous, with beautiful costumes and props.  But in fact, marriage during that period wasn't only gorgeous but also politically inclined. For feudal lords, marriage was very important for the sake of the family. If they failed to make the right decision, it would hurt the family’s name, rank and future.

The most important decision for the family to make was to select the right wife for the lord. It determined what kind of relationship the family will have with shogun, the most powerful figure of the period.
Kuroda Nagamasa, the founder of the Fukuoka Clan, wanted to find him and his son a shogun relative to marry with.

The wedding ceremony of the period followed traditional wedding rituals of samurai family, which includes a long parade of the future wife, heading to the husband’s house acompanied by numerous servants carrying expensive wedding items. Each wedding item must have the image of family crests of both families. It took a long time to prepare these items. In this exhibition, we will be showing some wedding items with Tokugawa or Honda family crests, the most powerful families of the time.




The newlyweds dwelt in a newly-built palace in Edo. All the new servants for the lady of the family were hired there, and it costs the family a tremendous amount of money. The new lady was educated to be more sophisticated to meet the family and relatives’ expectations.

学芸課長のつぶやき1「いよいよ・・・」

いよいよ「よみがえれ!鴻臚館」展が始まります!

福岡市博物館では、毎年秋、福岡の歴史をモチーフとした特別展(福岡市博物館が自主的に企画する展覧会なので「自主企画展」とよびます)を実施します。
今年の秋は、「よみがえれ!鴻臚館」展。

鴻臚館って何?と思われたあなた、福岡の人ではないですね?

鴻臚館→「こうろかん」と読みます。

昭和62年に、かつての西鉄ライオンズの本拠地である平和台球場の改修工事に伴って発見され、当時新聞の1面を連日にぎわせた大遺跡。とはいえ、それも30年前のことで、詳しく覚えているのは、50代以上か・・・(実は私も50代)。

鴻臚館とは、奈良・平安時代にあった日本政府の迎賓館(のようなもの)で、発掘調査では、奈良の正倉院にあるようなものが次々と見つかりました(とは言っても、いずれも破片ですが)。

今回の展覧会は、30年間の発掘調査で出土した貴重な出土遺物とともに、京都や東京から、平安時代をしのばせる美術品もお借りして展示します。
その詳細な内容はおいおい紹介するとして・・・
そもそも展覧会の企画はどのようにして決まるのでしょうか。

福岡市博物館では、おおむね2年前からスタートします。

福岡市博物館には、歴史学・考古学・民俗学・古美術学を担当する学芸員がおりますが、学芸員たちが9月に会議をやって、「2年後の展覧会は何にしよう?」と話し合います。

「福岡城をテーマにしよう」「邪馬台国はどうだ」「九州の仏教美術がふさわしい」など喧々諤々。殴り合いをすることもなく、話し合いの結果、みんなが譲り合って、展覧会の内容が決まります。だって、展覧会の担当者になると、どっと仕事が増えちゃうじゃん・・・

平成27年の会議で決まったテーマは「鴻臚館」。名乗り出た勇気ある学芸員は、30代の考古学担当。ちょうど平成29年が発掘開始30年であるため、とりあえずつけたタイトルが
「唐物と鴻臚館 ~鴻臚館跡発掘30周年記念特別展~(仮)」。ちょっと今と違いますね。

展覧会の概要が決まると、すぐに「調べもの」が始まります。福岡市博物館の特別展示室は1,500㎡!地方館ではまれにみる広さで、国立博物館並み(九州国立博物館も1,500㎡)。

この広さを展示物で埋めつくすのは、少々の点数では埋まりません。平成27年度は来る日も来る日も、関係書籍を繰り、コピーをし、台帳を増やし続ける毎日です。こうして27年度は暮れていきます。

Feature Exhibition: Lady palanquins of Kuroda Family -The most elegant transportation method of the samurai period.

 In the Edo period, members of noble families used palanquins as their means of transportation. The design is strictly designated by rank of the family. Especially, lady palanquins of samurai families were highly decorative. A design called 梨子地 Nashikochiwas the best of all. The lacquer used on the vehicle contains gold and silver glitters. 


To make it more gorgeous, unique patterns and family crests are embedded on top. In this exhibition, we will be showing two lady palanquins from the Fukuoka Clan and the Akitsuki Clan.



By seeing the family crest, we can tell Palanquin #1  belonged  to the lady of the Fukuoka Clan.

The other one is said to be a palanquin used by the lady of Nagatsugu Kuroda, 9th lord of Akitsuki Clan.


 
There are not so many lady palanquins left today. These two were  fortunately  preserved, for they have long been displayed in places such as  banquet halls  or   hotels. 

Appreciate the  palanquins and have a glimpse of how  gorgeously ladies of samurais were living in the past.

グランドホールの人形展示替えを行いました!

休館日の7月31日(月)、グランドホールの博多人形展示替えを行いました。今回作業をしてくれたのは、学芸員実習に参加の16名の学生の皆さん!戸惑いつつもなかなか手際よく進めてくれていましたよ!

前回展示分の人形梱包を終えたばかりの、実習生の古川さんに感想を聞いてみました!


 今秋公開の展覧会、「よみがえれ!鴻臚館―行き交う人々と唐物―」のポスター前で。古川さんもおススメの展覧会です!

初めての展示替え作業はいかがでしたか?
「素焼きの素材で、傷をつけないか心配でした。展示替えと一言でいってもただ単に展示物の入れ替えをするのではなく、梱包をする際は来年また展示するときに出しやすいように工夫をしながら進めていく必要があるのだなと感じました。」

 繊細な博多人形の取り扱いは、なかなか手がかかったようです。そのかいもあって、現在グランドホールには華やかな放生会、十日恵比寿の光景が展示されています!


未来の学芸員の皆さんが心を籠めて展示した、博多人形。是非見に来てください!
