Utagawa Kuniyoshi(1797-1861) was an artist who established a brand-new standard in the Ukiyoe world at the end of the Edo period by creating some dynamic woodprints of warriors and unique satirical pictures. Kuniyoshi, who was a big-brother type, att
racted many disciples. He and his school tried to evolve the Ukiyoe art as a whole by continuously challenging new themes or new style of expressions in a period of drastic change and confusion. Tsukioka Honen(1839-92) is especially regaining his rep
utation nowadays as an artist who greatly contributed to seamlessly integrate Ukiyoe and western art.
This exhibition introduces about 150 ukiyoe art from the collection of the Nagoya City Museum, and focuses on how the new aspect of Ukiyoe art that was founded by Kuniyoshi, with his expressiveness, brimming curiosity and flexible way of thinking, w
as inherited and further evolved by his disciples. There are some shocking expressions, so please be prepared!
