Museum Closure Blog: Museum Collections that Don’t Rest Even During the Closure #2

The Fukuoka City Museum is currently closed to update the electrical facilities and renovate the toilets. It will remain closed up until the end of March. However, some of our collections don’t just sit inside the closed museum.

For example, our main artifact, the Gold Seal, a national treasure, is now exhibited at the Fukuoka Art Museum until March 28th. Gold seal themed merchandise are also available at the museum store.

The other day, three curators from the KITAKYUSHU MUSEUM OF NATURAL & HUMAN HISTORY visited the closed Fukuoka City Museum. They were there to borrow some of our collection pieces for their upcoming exhibition entitled “Radiance of the Treasure Sword, 'Hakata Toshiro.' ”

The pieces were carefully checked and packed one by one by five people. To be more precise, there  were three curators from the KITAKYUSHU MUSEUM OF NATURAL & HUMAN HISTORY, two curators from the Fukuoka City Museum, and four staff members of a carrier agent who were professionals at delivering artwork.

On that day, we lent them 17 pieces for the exhibition, including articles related to Kuroda Tadayuki, the second lord of the Fukuoka Clan, who gifted the sword Hakata Toshiro to the Ogasawara Family, a main family of the Kokura Clan.

This nerve-racking work started in the morning and finished at 3 in the afternoon.

On the exhibition brochure, you can see the armor of Kuroda Tadayuki, the second lord of the Fukuoka Clan, which we lent to the exhibition this time.
